Shortly after graduating with her bachelor's degree in 2003, Pamela began her professional career at UCU as a Teaching Assistant in the Faculty of Education. Over the years, she served the university in numerous roles, steadily rising through the ranks because of her dedication, competence, and passion for student development.

Her roles at UCU included:

  • Teaching Assistant
  • Administrative Assistant
  • Executive Assistant to senior university leadership
  • Executive Officer in the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Finance and Administration)
  • Head of the Honors College
  • Director of Student Affairs (DOSA)

As Director of Student Affairs, Pamela oversaw student welfare, discipline, counselling, and leadership development. The office of the DOSA plays a central role in student life at UCU and is also part of the university's senior leadership.

Pamela was widely respected for her hands-on leadership style and her deep commitment to the well-being of students. Colleagues and students often described her leadership as both firm and compassionate. She believed discipline was not punishment but preparation for responsible adulthood.

She consistently encouraged students not only to pursue academic excellence but also to grow in character, integrity, and spiritual maturity.

Pamela often spoke about her passion for mentoring young people. She believed educators had a responsibility to guide students during their formative years and help them become leaders who would positively shape society.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Pamela was deeply committed to her Christian faith. At UCU she was known not only as an administrator but also as a spiritual mentor. She regularly prayed with students, encouraged them in their faith, and helped many navigate personal struggles.

She openly professed her Christian faith and was known in her church circles as a teacher of the Word of God.

Pamela was also a devoted mother to her two sons, Noah and Elijah, whom she loved deeply.

About eleven years before her passing, Pamela entered into marriage. Unfortunately, the marriage faced significant challenges and did not work out despite efforts at mediation by family elders. After about three years, she separated from her husband. At the time of her passing, she was in the process of pursuing an official divorce.

Despite the difficulties she experienced in her personal life, Pamela remained devoted to raising her sons and providing them with love, stability, and guidance.

Character and Impact

Pamela is widely remembered as a compassionate and approachable leader. Many students saw her as a mother figure whose office door was always open to those facing academic, financial, or personal challenges.

She took a personal interest in the lives of students, helping many overcome difficulties such as substance abuse, academic struggles, and emotional hardship. In some cases, she even opened her own home to students who needed support.

Her guiding belief was that every student had potential, and that it was the responsibility of educators to help young people discover and develop that potential.

Through her work, mentorship, and leadership, Pamela influenced and transformed the lives of countless students across generations.

Tragic Death and Lasting Legacy

Pamela's life was tragically cut short on 11 February 2026, when she was killed at her home in Gwafu, Seeta, Mukono District.

At the time, Pamela lived in the home with her two sons and a live-in house help. In the early hours of the morning, around 2:00 a.m., the house help heard a stranger moving inside the house. It was later discovered that the intruder had murdered Pamela.

The attacker fled during the night, reportedly wearing Pamela's clothes as a disguise. He also stole her phone and laptop before escaping.

Pamela's death left a profound void within the UCU community, among her family, friends, and the many students whose lives she had touched.

Yet even in her absence, her legacy lives on—through the students she mentored, the lives she shaped, and the faith and compassion she demonstrated throughout her life.

Pamela Ruth Tumwebaze will be remembered not only for the roles she held, but for the love, wisdom, and guidance she gave to so many.

Her life continues to speak through the countless people she inspired.
